In this interview, Hartmut Wimmer explains why Outdooractive partnered with Green Destinations and how destinations can benefit from this collaboration
This article is part of the “Sustainable tourism insights” interview series with speakers and participants of the Green Destinations Conference in Athens, Greece held in September 2022.
Hartmut Wimmer is the Founder and CEO of Outdooractive. Anula Galewska, Travindy’s Managing Director, asked Hartmut about Outdooractive’s sustainability initiatives and why they’ve decided to partner with Green Destinations.
Outdooractive is an online platform for outdoor activities, with downloadable route guides, outdoor maps, and powerful GPS navigation features. It’s an enabler for meaningful outdoor experiences through technology. Outdooractive is visited by over 60 million users every month.
Hartmut believes that sustainability lies in the nature of outdoor enthusiasts, who not only want to enjoy nature but they also want to protect it. That’s why the main goal of Outdooractive is to provide visitors of nature areas with all necessary information, including local regulations and codes of conduct.
During the Green Destinations conference, Outdooractive singed a partnership agreement with Green Destinations. This cooperation creates powerful synergies between the two organisations.
Green Destinations created criteria for sustainable destinations and awards them for their sustainability efforts. Outdooractive, on the other hand, through technology, can help integrate sustainability criteria and promote the most sustainable destinations.
Already around 2500 destinations are working with Outdooractive – they create unique content on the platform, from listing hiking routes to describing weather conditions, and providing all sorts of useful tips for outdoor visitors. Destinations also can build their own communities and in a more personalised manner, recommend and guide travellers.
