Japan’s zoos and aquariums have announced they will no longer buy dolphins captured during the annual hunt at Taiji that gained international notoriety through the documentary The Cove. Nonetheless, the hunts are set to continue.
GRAB THE ESSENTIALS
- In April, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums suspended Japan’s association for violating the global organization’s code of ethics.
- The Japanese association represents 89 zoos and 63 aquariums, with around 250 dolphins in their facilities.
- Japanese aquariums buy an average of 20 dolphins from Taiji every year.
