Sustainable tourism best practices

This collection of good practices in the tourism sector from across the globe aims to showcase practical and inspiring examples of how sustainability actions can be implemented within a travel business, organization, and/or sector-relevant activities.

About the best sustainable tourism practices collection

At Travindy transparency and practicality are considered to be of essence when showcasing learning opportunities and inspiration for more sustainable solutions in travel. Therefore, the compendium aims to present cases that are as practical as possible, so those who access it can learn from and adopt some of the actions to their own distinct environments and contexts, and start their journey and contribution towards a more sustainable future.

This compendium also seeks to present tourism as an important tool in addressing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals proposed by the UN. Moreover, the cases in this collection were selected based on factors such as acknowledgment of these by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and/or the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), third-party verification through a sustainable certification/award acquired no earlier than 2018 where applicable, or inside knowledge on the legitimacy of actions and projects from Travindy & Partners team members. Nonetheless, although this compendium includes a variety of best practices, it is fortunately not exhaustive.

Finally, no financial or any other form of contribution which could influence the process of creating the present compilation of best practices was involved, therefore the listing of cases is made on the categorization outlined in the below ‘How to navigate’ sections.

The selected cases are categorized within six different ‘business profiles’ of their executors, which are:

  • Accomodation Facilities
  • Airlines & Airports
  • Destinations and DMOs (Destination Management Organizations)
  • Non-Profit Organizations & Projects
  • Tour Operators
  • Travel Technology Companies & OTAs (Online Travel Agencies)
  • Crisis Response [Specials]

This categorization was chosen to ease the process of finding good practices based on the business profile of those, who access this collection. For example, if a hotel wishes to read specifically about sustainable best practices of other accommodation providers, this can be done by navigating directly to the section ‘Accommodation facilities’.

However, it is encouraged to learn about the other sustainable practices of this compilation as well, as each case presents hands-on solutions and actions for different issues in various countries, cultures, and environments, and therefore represents a good learning opportunity.
