Sustainability assessment – Kyrgyzstan

In the frames of the Sustainable Winter Tourism Development Project in Kyrgyzstan run by Helvetas and funded by the Government of Switzerland, we have conducted a sustainability assessment of the Karakol city. Destination has been assessed against 30 sustainability criteria, according to the Green Destinations standard. It comprised of criteria related to destination management, environment, climate and nature protection, culture and social wellbeing and business engagement.
The assessment was based on data collected by local experts, stakeholder interviews and materiality analysis and a site visit. As a result, destination received a gap analysis with recommendations, action plan with priority areas, detailed guidance for each action, a set of best practices and additional resources. In addition to the stakeholder interviews, a sustainable destination management workshop was organised for local tourism stakeholders that included local administration, educational institutions and private sector.
