\"SeaWorld<\/a>SeaWorld\u00a0has announced that its theme parks will stop breeding orcas. The 2013 documentary Blackfish, which chronicled the life of Tilikum, an orca who spent many years at Orlando\u2019s SeaWorld and killed trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010, helped turn the tide<\/a> of public opinion against the large theme parks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0According to the company’s CEO Joel Manby, the orcas currently in their parks\u00a0would remain there, as they would likely die if released into the ocean. SeaWorld currently owns 29 such animals. Instead of theatrical shows, SeaWorld also said that it will soon offer orca encounters focussed\u00a0around issues around conservation, describing them as resembling an\u00a0\u201cengaging documentary<\/a>.\u201d<\/div>\n

The company also said that it\u00a0will partner\u00a0with the Humane Society of the United States<\/a> to conserve marine life at risk.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 3,000 species are endangered, and hundreds are lost every year. Some scientists predict that, within a century, 50% of large mammals will be extinct\u2026Together, we will work against commercial whaling and seal hunts, shark finning and ocean pollution,\u201d said the company’s CEO<\/a>.<\/p>\n
