conference.\u00a0The sector is often lauded as a valuable source of income for developing countries with beautiful\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scidev.net\/global\/environment\/\">environments.<\/a>\u00a0But it is not creating better infrastructure such as roads and clean water, as its representatives often claim, the audience heard last week at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rgs.org\/WhatsOn\/ConferencesAndSeminars\/Annual+International+Conference\/Annual+international+conference.htm\" rel=\"nofollow\">annual international conference<\/a>\u00a0of the United Kingdom\u2019s Royal Geographical\u00a0Society.<\/p>\n<h6>In Brief<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>The conference heard that carbon dioxide emissions from tourists\u2019 travel are expected to quadruple by 2100, making a significant contribution to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scidev.net\/global\/environment\/climate-change\/\">climate change<\/a>, which disproportionately affects developing\u00a0countries.<\/li>\n<li>Paul Peeters, who researches sustainable tourism at NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, said
