Far from being decimated by poaching, its elephant\u00a0and rhino populations are thriving.\u00a0It\u2019s also one of just a few African countries that is home to\u00a0six species of large carnivores\u00a0\u2014 lions, spotted hyenas, wild dogs,\u00a0cheetahs, leopards and brown hyenas. Why? In recent years &#8220;Namibia\u00a0has undergone\u00a0a conservation revolution and in the process, generated jobs and income for thousands of rural residents through safari tourism.&#8221; At the heart of this success has been\u00a0the adoption (as part of government policy) since the early 90s of a\u00a0communal conservancies concept that gives\u00a0communities the\u00a0right to oversee wildlife and natural resources on their communal land, &#8220;with the understanding that rural communities will use natural resources in a sustainable manner if these resources have sufficient value and benefit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h6>In Brief<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Namibia has at least\u00a082 registered communal conservancies, one community conservation association in a National Park, 15 concessions in National Parks or on other state land, 32 community forests, 66 community range-land management areas and three community fish reserves<\/li>\n<li>Almost half \u2014 about 46\u00a0percent \u2014 of Namibia\u2019s surface area is under conservation management.<\/li>\n<li>With there being value to communities in protecting wildlife, since 1995, Namibia\u2019s desert-adapted lion population has
