Imagine travelling to a city where all the tourist offers are available on an app<\/strong><\/a> and in your native language<\/strong><\/a>. Where you don\u2019t need to queue<\/strong><\/a> for galleries because installations can be conjured up using your smartphone. Or where virtual reality (VR) reconstructions of historical events breathe life into heritage sites<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smart cities are redefining tourism<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years of pandemic-related travel restrictions changed the way we experience the world. Virtual tours<\/strong><\/a> helped us explore destinations from the comfort of our couches, and business travel<\/strong><\/a> waned as video calls took over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now borders<\/strong><\/a> have reopened, countries are capitalising on this technology to attract tourists and enhance their experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term \u2018smart city<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 might make you think of\u00a0robots<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0walking the streets, flying cars crossing the skies or artificial intelligence controlling public services. The reality is slightly different, but no less exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being a smart city means standing out in accessibility<\/strong><\/a>, sustainability<\/strong><\/a>, digitalisation, creativity and protection<\/strong><\/a> of cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denmark<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s capital led the way on this even before the pandemic. The Copenhagen<\/strong><\/a> Visitor Service invites tourists to plan their itineraries with the help of touch screen guides, robotics and VR<\/strong><\/a> goggles, while an app disseminates information and collects data to help improve the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoping to join these ranks, destinations like Zagreb<\/strong><\/a> in Croatia and Paphos<\/strong><\/a> in Cyprus spare no effort. They are using technologies<\/strong><\/a> such as augmented reality (AR) to create virtual experiences that are usually reserved for the gaming industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These initiatives have seen both cities shortlisted for the 2023 European Capital of Smart Tourism, a competition that recognises outstanding achievements by European cities<\/strong><\/a> as tourism destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AR transforms Zagreb into a giant virtual art exhibition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last month, the Zagreb Tourist Board teamed up with technology company Equinox to turn the capital of Croatia<\/strong><\/a> into a giant virtual art exhibition, dubbed Art Future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visitors were invited to download the Equinox XR app on their phones. Once they reached the location of a particular \u2018installation\u2019, they could open their camera on the app and the\u00a0artwork<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was overlaid in AR – a familiar experience for any Pok\u00e9mon GO players out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAugmented reality is a technology that enables people to experience virtual<\/strong><\/a> content, embedded in the real world which surrounds them,” explains Ivan Voras, founder of Equinox and technical director of the exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This can be achieved through special hardware like glasses, but it’s much more efficient and reaches a wider audience currently to do it through mobile phones<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nineteen contemporary artists, animators and 3D modellers from around the world displayed their \u2018locative art\u2019 – virtual art<\/strong><\/a> in real-life locations – at Art Future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVisitors and residents [could] view artwork created by major international artists in almost every square or park across the city,\u201d says Ivan. Themes covered the polarising world of NFTs<\/strong><\/a>, the healing power of art, and conceptual solutions to global warming<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was not the first time Equinox teamed up with the Zagreb Tourist Board for a future-forward exhibition. At Christmas, they placed animated and interactive gift boxes around the city for people to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both projects created digital exhibits firmly rooted in the real world – and demonstrated how tech can be used to enhance tourist<\/strong><\/a> attractions without the need for major infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paphos brings its mythical heritage sites to life through your smartphone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Paphos in southwest Cyprus<\/strong><\/a> is a popular tourist destination. The coastal city is known as the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, and its ancient remains have earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong><\/a> status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leveraging the city\u2019s\u00a0mythical<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0past in futuristic fashion, the Paphos tourism board has developed an app that allows users to bring its fabled history to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
