Sustainable travel is finally going mainstream – and with a new call to action: regenerative tourism.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Floods<\/strong><\/a>, heatwaves<\/strong><\/a>, forest fires<\/strong><\/a> and droughts<\/strong><\/a> have put the environment at the forefront in 2022. At the same time, travellers are eager to reconnect with nature<\/strong><\/a> coming out of the pandemic. So how can we do this without becoming part of the problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Booking.com\u2019s 2022 Sustainable Travel Report, which polled 30,000 global travellers across 32 countries, 42 per cent said that recent news about climate change<\/strong><\/a> had influenced them to make more sustainable travel choices. More than half (57 per cent) said they wanted to travel more sustainably<\/strong><\/a> in the next 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This growing desire to make more sustainable travel<\/strong><\/a> choices screams opportunity, and travel companies are starting to take note. However, simply cutting down on energy usage and ditching single-use plastics isn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, the tourism industry needs to find ways to\u00a0preserve<\/strong><\/a>, protect and proactively regenerate the destinations it serves. Here\u2019s how regenerative travel works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is regenerative travel?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whereas sustainable tourism<\/strong><\/a> might aim for carbon-neutral practices, regenerative<\/strong><\/a> travel shoots for carbon negative. This means investing in solutions that remove or offset more carbon than they emit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sustainable hotel<\/strong><\/a> might limit its carbon output by using solar-power or encouraging EV travel. But a regenerative one will proactively benefit the environment, for example by removing additional carbon<\/strong><\/a> from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regenerative tourism also involves investing in projects that will improve the\u00a0environment<\/strong><\/a>, rather than just restoring it to how it was found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move towards biodiversity regeneration – tree planting<\/strong><\/a>, habitat restoration and other investments in nature – is gaining momentum. More than 100 countries have now signed up to the \u201830×30<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 pact to protect at least 30 per cent of land and sea by 2030. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both travel companies and destinations are realising they can help in this mission.\u00a0New Zealand<\/strong><\/a>, for example, is a pioneer of regenerative travel. During the pandemic, the country announced plans to\u00a0decarbonise<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0tourism by restoring landscapes damaged by footfall and incentivising\u00a0electric vehicle<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adventure tour<\/strong><\/a> operator Exodus Travels is leading the way in the commercial sphere with its pledge to become \u2018nature net positive\u2019 by 2024. The jewel in its crown is a huge rewilding<\/a><\/strong> project in the Apennines of Italy, partially funded by trip bookings, which has the potential to remove approximately 1,500 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, how do you plan an environmentally responsible<\/strong><\/a> trip?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eco travel agents and carbon offsetting pave the way for regenerative travel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRegenerative tourism is an element of sustainability<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d says Nelly O Gedeon, founder and CEO of eco-travel app Wayaj. Through the app, travellers can explore and book sustainable and socially responsible experiences and hotels throughout the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hotels are given a \u2018sustainability<\/strong><\/a> rating\u2019 based on seven factors: materials, community support, management, water and energy consumption, waste management and indoor environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we need is for more participants – travellers and travel providers – to become more aware, understand, and appreciate the importance of this sector so they can play a greater role in embracing sustainable<\/strong><\/a> [and] regenerative tourism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wayaj doesn\u2019t just gather responsible operators in one place. It allows you to calculate the carbon footprint of your trip and purchase\u00a0carbon offsets<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to neutralise your environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
