Tourism will not survive without becoming environmentally sustainable and including a \u201cfair carbon price\u201d in the cost of travel, according to Travel Foundation climate specialist Jeremy Smith.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Smith told the N\u00eemes forum: \u201cTourism would be unsustainable if the carbon price was included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe problem is we\u2019re not adding a fair carbon price. It will have to be paid by the traveller. Travel has to become more expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Travel & Tourism Council head of research Nejc Jus agreed, warning: \u201cIf we don\u2019t make destinations sustainable, there won\u2019t be tourism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he added: \u201cSustainability and growth go hand in hand. If we don\u2019t have tourists go to a destination, there is no positive contribution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zina Bencheikh, Intrepid Travel managing director for the EMEA region, said: \u201cThe majority of our customers don\u2019t book holidays with us because of sustainability but because they are good value for money. Yet often they came back and want sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She insisted: \u201cIt\u2019s not true that sustainability is more expensive. It\u2019s often cheaper.\u201d For example, she said: \u201cEat in a mainstream tourist restaurant and then go with a local guide to a local food place and it will be cheaper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bencheikh added: \u201cA lot of businesses show certification now. It\u2019s an easy way to show a customer a destination is sustainable without them having to think too much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smith, the co-founder of Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency and co-author of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism launched at the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow last year, argued: \u201cYou can\u2019t work on tourism, climate and sustainability and not have bleak days. It\u2019s terrifying we have to do so much so quickly but it\u2019s great for collaboration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
