Where are the new metrics tourism desperately needs? How will this industry actually treat nature and communities as equal beneficiaries? Is tourism ready to demolish its neocolonial mindset? Those are the pressing questions facing the industry. For now, it&#8217;s mostly talk and no walk.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside tourism\u2019s biggest bounce-back yet since 2020, sending consumers rushing back to overcrowded destinations, the travel industry continues to dig for ways to avoid a return to business-as-usual \u2014 and it is doing so by pushing forward the concepts of sustainability and regeneration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But rather than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2022\/04\/19\/dear-travel-leaders-sustainability-is-not-a-pr-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">espousing nebulous principles<\/a>&nbsp;that few consumers understand and for which few businesses are offering solutions or acting on beyond words, global tourism must rethink its influential role as a business: avoid a blanket use of \u201csustainability,\u201d embrace locally-led and locally-designed solutions, define new success metrics, undo the problematic entanglement between tourism and conservation, and do away with the western mindset that plagues the industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are the recommendations of Dr. Mordecai Ogada on how tourism must \u201cbuild back better.\u201d A Kenyan carnivore ecologist and the co-author of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ogada.co.ke\/\">The Big Conservation Lie<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>Ogada will be presenting at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/live.skift.com\/skift-global-forum-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Skift Global Forum<\/a>\u00a0in New York City this month<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSustainability is being used even in scientific literature like a technical term, and we forget that it is just a subjective adjective; it\u2019s like loveability\u2014are you loveable? That subjectivity creates a problem, especially for tourism,\u201d Ogada told Skift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ogada\u2019s initial encounter with the tourism industry\u2019s extractive powers took place when he was the manager of the Kenya Wildlife Trust in 2008, a then-non profit governmental organization formed in partnership with luxury safari camping brands. It\u2019s a page-turning story he shares in his book.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Ogada\u2019s work with Survival International focuses on the impact of conservation activities on Indigenous Peoples\u2019 rights in Africa, bringing a boots on the ground, no holds barred perspective at a turning point for the tourism industry coming out of the pandemic. In the next decade, travel and tourism\u2019s annual growth rate is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wttc.org\/Portals\/0\/Documents\/Reports\/2022\/EIR2022-Global%20Trends.pdf\">projected<\/a>\u00a0to reach 5.8 percent \u2014 more than double the estimated growth rate for the global economy. But\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/megatrends-2022\/#\/read\/travels-super-mobility-collides-with-deepening-social-divide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global inequality<\/a>\u00a0and social pushback are also at their highest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the example of tourism\u2019s undue influence on Africa\u2019s host communities and their livelihoods \u2014 from conservation practices to \u201cartistic impressions\u201d a-la-Lion King suited to lure western travelers \u2014 Ogada lays out key principles that must guide global tourism\u2019s path forward as an influential industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-tourism-must-avoid-sustainability-unless-locally-defined\">1. Tourism Must Avoid \u201cSustainability\u201d Unless Locally Defined<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainability has long suffered from elitism, but if the industry is to move towards a more positively impacting form of business, it must take into account local solutions as to what sustainability means for a specific host community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomeone might think a guy herding his goat is destroying the environment,\u201d said Ogada, \u201cbut the same person saying that thinks a tourist flying from New York with a huge carbon footprint to come and sit here and see elephants and drink champagne that\u2019s refrigerated, is sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This subjective nature of sustainability is also what drives some of the nonsensical solutions that have emerged, such as carbon offsets, Ogada said, adding that sustainability therefore should be avoided unless expressed by the person in situ.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tourism must work around what locals determine is their sustainable way of life, and tourists should be prepared to see locals in their traditional environment because ultimately, tourism as a business is not a sustainable endeavor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been pushed for so long that tourism is a viable alternative to agriculture or other livelihoods, and then the pandemic hit,\u201d said Ogada. \u201cWhat we can learn from that is that tourism is like haute couture, it\u2019s fashion that changes every day and it\u2019s very vulnerable to a pandemic or to a financial crash. Tourism is a good livelihood, but it should be additional, not alternative.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a
