Mass tourism is causing pollution problems in Mazatl\u00e1n, triggering calls for a greater focus on sustainable tourism in the Pacific coast resort city.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

S<\/span>ome 677,000 tourists are expected to visit the Sinaloa beach destination\u00a0during the summer vacation period of July and August<\/a>, according to the newspaper\u00a0El Sol de Mazatl\u00e1n,\u00a0<\/em>which also reported that 800,000 visitors flocked to the city in Holy Week, a figure that easily exceeds Mazatl\u00e1n\u2019s population of approximately 500,000. In addition, Mazatlan is expected to see\u00a0three times as many cruise ships<\/a>\u00a0visit this year than in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Luis Guillermo Ben\u00edtez Torres acknowledged last week that Mazatl\u00e1n is swamped with tourists, but asserted that is a good thing given the benefits tourism brings to the local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Mazatl\u00e1n there are vacations practically the whole year. \u2026 You have to line up for about two hours to enjoy breakfast in a restaurant because fortunately everything is saturated,\u201d he said last Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanca Rold\u00e1n, a Mazatl\u00e1n-based academic who specializes in issues related to the environment and development, agreed that tourism is good for Mazatl\u00e1n from an economic standpoint, but highlighted that the massive influx of visitors also has negative consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\u00a0contamination problem<\/a>\u00a0is undoubtedly increasing,\u201d she told\u00a0El Sol de Mazatl\u00e1n<\/em>. Rold\u00e1n said that the accumulation of waste, as well as noise and visual pollution, are tourism-related problems in the city known as the \u201cPearl of the Pacific.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe most common [form of pollution], or that which citizens notice the most, is that generated by trash, especially on the coast and in public places,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rold\u00e1n said that nightclubs and bars as well as public transport and tourism-related construction projects all contribute to noise pollution in Mazatl\u00e1n, while construction projects also cause visual pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
