In the weeks since, residents have been forced to leave their homes, many of which have since been demolished. Our Observers say they are devastated to witness the destruction of homes that are an important piece of Cairo\u2019s cultural heritage.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One after another, Cairo\u2019s &#8220;awamas<em>&#8220;<\/em>&nbsp;have emptied, with&nbsp;residents leaving and taking their belongings with them. On June 26, the Egyptian government began a campaign to clear the Nile of these houseboats by either destroying them or moving them farther down the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authorities&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alarab.co.uk\/%D8%A3%D8%B5%D8%AD%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%8A%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%8A%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%A8%D8%A3%D9%85%D8%B1-%D8%AD%D9%83%D9%88%D9%85%D9%8A-%D8%A5%D9%84%D9%89-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%87%D9%88%D9%84\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">want to transform the banks of the Nile into an area for tourists<\/a>&nbsp;that would include a promenade and lots of shops, caf\u00e9s and restaurants. An&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RHNt-bYjO_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">initial part of this project&nbsp;<\/a>was already completed on the eastern bank of the Nile near the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Pont%20Qasr%20El\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qasr El Nil bridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/search\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%83%D9%8A%D8%AA+%D9%83%D8%A7%D8%AA%E2%80%AD\/@30.0569376,31.2124215,15.75z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elkit Kat<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Agouza,%20Gizeh,\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agoza<\/a>\u00a0neighbourhoods, 25 of the 32 &#8220;awamas&#8221; moored on the banks of the Nile have already been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=04072022&amp;id=a05bbe66-c359-4679-91ac-ccaa81b942e9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">completely or partially destroyed<\/a>. Other houseboats have been brought to hangars belonging to the Egyptian ministry for the management of water and irrigation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former residents, many of whom had owned their boats for decades, were powerless to stop the demolition.
