\"GenderT<\/span>he protests organized by room attendants in Spain and other countries where tourism is a key economic player are increasingly frequent and better coordinated. They are seeking not only to improve their working conditions<\/strong>\u00a0but also to reach out to society and\u00a0fight the stigma<\/strong>\u00a0associated with such positions, which are largely feminized.<\/p>\n

Research conducted by experts at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) and published in\u00a0Annals of Tourism Research\u00a0<\/em><\/a>has analysed the various tactics used by room attendants in the tourism sector in their fight against social devaluation and the precariousness of their jobs. “Las Kellys deploys\u00a0three types of subversion tactics\u00a0on\u00a0three different levels, namely the\u00a0employment, organizational and socio-political levels,” said\u00a0Verna Alcalde, a predoctoral researcher and the lead author of this research paper, which forms part of a thesis being developed in the UOC’s\u00a0doctoral programme in Society, Technology and Culture.<\/p>\n

Specifically, with respect to\u00a0employment, this group aims to\u00a0redefine\u00a0the work of room attendants as\u00a0qualified and rewarding. With regard to\u00a0organizational aspects, Las Kellys highlights the\u00a0central role of room attendants\u00a0within the hotel business model. And, finally, at the\u00a0socio-political level<\/strong>, the group has become a powerful player in the fight for\u00a0dignity\u00a0for these employees.<\/p>\n

“These three tactics are successful not only because they resignify the work done by room attendants in the hotel industry, but also because they constitute practices that\u00a0aim to transform their social and employment situation and empower them\u00a0as active agents of that transformation<\/strong>,”<\/em> said\u00a0Anna G\u00e1lvez Mozo, who is an expert in gender, employment and precarious work, a researcher in the UOC’s Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences and the thesis supervisor.<\/p>\n

In this regard, it should be noted that\u00a0Las Kellys has achieved a high level of visibility and prominence in Spain<\/strong>\u00a0in its pursuit of the recognition of the central role played by room attendants in the smooth running of hotels and high-quality service.<\/p>\n
