Should the wilderness be restricted in some way?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Responses\u00a0swamped our inbox, with most making arguments for limiting tourism. \u201cThe last few decades have taught us so much about what happens to wild places when people trample them,\u201d wrote Margaret Cervarich, pointing to the trash pileup at Everest base camp.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cMany pristine and protected areas should be off-limits to humans completely, in my opinion. And a carefully evaluated few should be allowed for scientific studies,\u201d wrote Charlisa Cato. Several, including Alper Takci, felt the limitations need to go further: \u201cWe should seal the whole planet off to humans.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Indeed, some places have closed to travelers temporarily, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/travel\/destination\/iceland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iceland<\/a>\u2019s Fja\u00f0r\u00e1rglj\u00fafur Canyon\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/iceland-canyon-closing-overtourism-justin-bieber\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made viral<\/a>\u00a0in a Justin Bieber video. Maya Bay, in Thailand\u2019s Phi Phi archipelago,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/thailand-saving-a-beach-paradise-from-mass-tourism\/a-57230396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was overrun<\/a>\u00a0and its coral destroyed following the 2000 movie\u00a0The Beach\u00a0with Leonardo di Caprio. The beach, which has been closed since 2018, may soon reopen under stricter conditions. Other destinations have banned specific activities: In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/travel\/destination\/hawaii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hawaii<\/a>, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westhawaiitoday.com\/2021\/09\/29\/hawaii-news\/rule-banning-swimming-with-spinner-dolphins-goes-into-effect-oct-28\/?fbclid=IwAR0rIofTySaPXWG3LltO7frZofOFBsDUbE1kYebLK8_BzA0D-CF7GT-s2z8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new law\u00a0<\/a>goes into effect on October 28 prohibiting swimming with spinner dolphins.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We put the same question to the experts.
