The European Union and more than 120 countries have taken actions to curb the use of single-use plastics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cConsumers like to talk about sustainability and ESG [environment, social and governance concerns] but they\u2019re not willing to pay a higher price for it,\u201d said Tyler Morse, chairman and CEO of hotel development and management firm\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcrhotels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MCR<\/a>, during the virtual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/live.skift.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Skift Hospitality &amp; Marketing Summit<\/a>\u00a0on June 16.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But progress still needs to be made on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2020\/03\/03\/travelers-frustrated-by-plastic-alternatives-offered-by-companies\/\">adopting alternatives to plastic that aren\u2019t frustrating travelers<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s outlawing plastic straws,\u201d Morse said. \u201cBut paper straws don\u2019t work after you sip on it five times, when they disintegrate in your mouth. The answer unequivocally is avocado pit straws that look and feel just like plastic straws but they cost nine times what a plastic straw does.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The report studied data voluntarily submitted by 69 hotels worldwide, with a heavy representation from all-inclusive resorts. The worst offenders were water bottles, making up to 32 percent by weight. Next up were disposable toiletries (31 percent by weight) and plastic bags and liners.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There were geographic variations. In North America and Europe, plastic bags tend to be roughly twice the weight as those in other parts of the world, often doubling the waste.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The report\u2019s answer to this question is partly that travel companies should try to reduce the use of these items rather than seek replacements \u201cwherever possible.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>This is an excerpt from
