Let\u2019s for instance remember Tourism Concern\u2019s strapline in the 1990\u2019s of \u2018Putting People in the Picture\u2019. Their archive is still available on the <a href=\"\/?page_id=30470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" label=\"Travindy (opens in a new tab)\">Travindy<\/a> website, for those who are interested.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore encouraging that Jeremy Sampson, Chief Executive of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetravelfoundation.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Travel Foundation (opens in a new tab)\"><em>The Travel Foundation<\/em><\/a>, recently published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/communities-belong-center-tourism-jeremy-sampson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"LinkedIn post (opens in a new tab)\">LinkedIn post<\/a> elaborating the organisation\u2019s intention to firmly place communities at the heart of the recovery process from COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.worldbank.org\/handle\/10986\/28535\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Research (opens in a new tab)\">Research<\/a> shows that women\u2019s empowerment, apart from the individual, social and economic benefits to women, can create healthier, more cohesive communities. It thereby also contributes to community resilience in times of crisis. So, putting gender equality at the heart of recovery of communities as part of a diversity strategy, which accepts the reality of intersectionality, is imperative. For this to happen, a gender lens needs to be trained on all policy making and action planning.<\/p>\n<p>This should include (prepare yourself, this is a long list):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inclusion of women and girls in all decision-making fora for tourism planning and implementation<\/li>\n<li>Focus on collecting disaggregated gender data based on intersectional criteria in consultation with relevant civil society organisations<\/li>\n<li>Practical support with care provision<\/li>\n<li>Gender sensitive training on sustainable tourism development<\/li>\n<li>Finance and business planning<\/li>\n<li>Financial incentives for sustainable tourism business start-ups<\/li>\n<li>Legal advice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026 and whatever else is deemed necessary in different local
