Well, the internet is with us now, which means there\u2019s a lot more information at our fingertips. In fact if you fancy a cruise, going online to choose can feel a bit like going into a sweetie shop. So many treats to suit so many different wishes and pockets! Problem is, if you want to cruise ethically, there\u2019s not a lot in the shop to help make a decision easier. No nice easy \u2018fair trade\u2019 products and nothing much on the labels, either, to help you make the decision.\n\nStill, when I did a blog search to see what was around, my browse threw up some surprises. The many blogs that warn you about the downsides of cruising all take the customer\u2019s view point \u2013 no surprise there. But determined digging often exposes a well of concern sometimes not too far down among the tourist-centric tips\u2013 with mentions of crew conditions and environmental issues.&nbsp; There are also reports of tougher legislation, meaning new cruise ships are far more eco friendly. So that\u2019s some progress there.\n\nWhat bloggers don\u2019t talk about are destination issues \u2013 like the&nbsp; impact on a port of disgorging thousands of passengers \u2013 except in terms of \u2018excursions are a rip off\u2019 on the one hand and \u2018don\u2019t expect to be alone on your ship\u2019s private island\u2019 on the other.&nbsp; Residents of <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hudin.com\/blog\/the-160e-solution-to-barcelonas-tourism-problem\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Barcelona<\/a><\/span> could tell them a thing or two about unwelcome cruise ship passengers, as could disappointed and desperate local entrepreneurs, in Falmouth, Jamaica <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cruiselawnews.com\/\">Cruise Law News<\/a><\/span> or any number of places where pre-booked tours pass them by \u2013 not only pass them by, but miss out on any real contact with the local culture.\n\nI suppose the other thing that strikes me about today\u2019s hugely varied cruise industry is that it doesn\u2019t matter whether you\u2019re on the Kerala backwaters, on the Danube or in the Caribbean, the ethical issues are the same, only different in scale. However, small in this sector is definitely more beautiful.\n\nSo based on my web crawl I\u2019ve come up with five alternative tips for what to think about before you embark on a cruise booking:\n\n\n<ol>\n \t\n\n<li><strong>You get what you pay for!<\/strong>&nbsp; There\u2019s a magic about moving gently on water between new places, and the word \u2018cruise\u2019 still has an association with the high life.&nbsp; But the whiff of privileged glamour is an illusion for most people buying into today\u2019s mass market model.&nbsp; If you choose a cheap economy package, you\u2019ll get a cheap economy experience \u2013 the websites cite horrors like dud balconies, noisy neighbours, added extras everywhere and thousands of people after your sun lounger.<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><strong>Every cruise creates rubbish to get rid of.<\/strong> Even on a small river boat there are waste and pollution challenges to solve. Some companies try hard. Others just say they do. It\u2019s a minefield working out which is which, but try combining \u2018cruise\u2019 and \u2018pollution\u2019 or \u2018eco friendly\u2019 in a search and you\u2019ll quickly find goodies and baddies.<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><strong>Water is precious.<\/strong>&nbsp; Whether it\u2019s for swimming pools \u2013 like \u2018people soup\u2019 according to one website \u2013 or water from your cabin tap, it\u2019s all had to be brought on board \u2013 and then what ? Finding out could be fascinating but not necessarily pleasant if you come across the \u2018black water\u2019 in your ship\u2019s wake, as one blogger did.<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><strong>While you\u2019re relaxing, someone down below is working their socks off.<\/strong>&nbsp; What your crew members do for their pay varies enormously depending on vessel size, but here\u2019s a rule of thumb: the bigger the ship, the more employees whose labour rights and conditions will be a world away from yours \u2013 and the less likely you\u2019ll get anywhere near to finding that out from the crew themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><strong>The places you disembark at often gain little from your presence<\/strong>. This is the untold story of so many cruise destinations and it\u2019s getting worse as large cruise ship companies work out better ways of capturing clients\u2019 excursion budgets before they set foot on dry land.
