The 5 winners were selected from 15 finalists, across 5 different award categories. A total of 183 applications entered the 2019 awards, across both large, and small tourism businesses, suppliers, and destinations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"272\" height=\"185\" class=\"wp-image-32721\" src=\"https:\/\/travindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/WTTC-image--e1554835881147.jpg\" alt=\"WTTC logo\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Now in their 15<sup>th<\/sup> year, the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, showcase the world\u2019s most inspiring sustainable travel organisations, and aim to recognise best practice in sustainable tourism within the global travel and tourism industry.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The awards are based on the 3 principles of:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>environmentally friendly operations;\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>support for the protection of cultural and natural heritage;\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>and direct benefits to the social and economic well-being of local people in global travel destinations.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For more information on the 2019 award categories, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wttc.org\/tourism-for-tomorrow-awards\/award-categories\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>The 5 award categories are:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Social Impact Award<\/li>\r\n<li>Destination Stewardship Award<\/li>\r\n<li>Climate Action Award<\/li>\r\n<li>Investing in People Award<\/li>\r\n<li>Changemakers Award<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>The 5 winners of the 2019 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Climate Action Award:<\/strong>Bucuti &amp; Tara Beach Resort, Aruba \u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Investing in People Award:<\/strong>Lemon Tree Hotels Limited, India\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Destination Stewardship Award:<\/strong>St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council, St. Kitts and Nevis\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Social Impact Award:<\/strong>Awamaki, Peru\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Changemakers Award:<\/strong>SEE Turtles, USA<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" class=\"wp-image-27740\" src=\"https:\/\/travindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guatemala.jpg\" alt=\"WTTC announces winners of the 2019 Tourism for Tomorrow awards\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travindy.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guatemala.jpg 960w, https:\/\/travindy.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guatemala-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/travindy.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/guatemala-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The winners were selected following a 3-phase judging approach. This included a thorough review of all submitted applications by an expert panel of 25 judges, drawn from academia, business, and NGOs. The best 15 applications (the \u2018finalists\u2019), across the 5 award categories, at this stage, were then assessed further, through an onsite evaluation. In 2018, the Travel &amp; Tourism sector contributed 10.4% of global GDP and supported 319 million jobs across the world. It is therefore essential that we continue to grow in the most sustainable and responsible way possible. The new award categories for this year are aligned with WTTC strategic priorities and illustrate that all members of this industry play a key role in driving the sector forward to a more responsible future.
