{"id":2600,"date":"2015-07-06T11:28:01","date_gmt":"2015-07-06T10:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/travindy.com\/?p=2600"},"modified":"2015-11-19T12:51:51","modified_gmt":"2015-11-19T11:51:51","slug":"barbados-seeking-to-get-on-top-of-seaweed-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/travindy.com\/news\/2015\/07\/barbados-seeking-to-get-on-top-of-seaweed-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Barbados seeking to get on top of seaweed problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2601\" src=\"https:\/\/travindy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/seaweed_7824-650x433.jpg\" alt=\"barbados beach covered in sargassum seaweed\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travindy.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/seaweed_7824-650x433.jpg 650w, https:\/\/travindy.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/seaweed_7824-650x433-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/>The Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) is seeking solutions to the problem of sargassum seaweed to tourism on the island,\u00a0which is spreading across many of its beaches and\u00a0affecting visitors and locals alike.\u00a0\u201cOur hotels on the south and east coasts are doing all they can to battle this issue by way of beach cleanups, where they rent equipment and employ additional workers in that area,&#8221; said BHTA Chief Executive Officer Sue Springer. &#8220;Some have also found uses for the seaweed in their gardens, nurseries and golf courses and one property is looking into the possibility of using a boom to prevent it from reaching the shore.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6 class=\"p1\">In Brief<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>The sargassum seaweed arrived on the beaches of Barbados and other Caribbean islands in 2011, and recently\u00a0the volume of algae has increased dramatically.<\/li>\n<li>Bajan fishermen say the sargassum has led to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/world\/severe-seaweed-invasion-fouling-barbados-beaches\/article24243713\/\" target=\"_blank\">diminished catches and a recent drop in earnings<\/a>, despite also\u00a0acting as floating habitats for various marine creatures.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0seaweed can provides habitat for sea\u00a0creatures as well as\u00a0forage for birds and other beach animals.
