businesses affiliated with the Chamber of Tourism of Osa (CATUOSA) have signed a pledge to\u00a0eliminate the use of plastic containers, bags and other plastic disposable items in shops, bars and restaurants in the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.co.cr\/osa-peninsula-bridges-to-aid-rural-residents-tourism-in-costa-ricas-south-pacific\/61518\/\">Osa Peninsula<\/a> region in southern Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p>Companies plan to substitute single-use\u00a0plastics and styrofoam packages like utensils, cups, plates, straws and bags\u00a0for biodegradable items made from bamboo, cloth, starches, cereals, hemp, and other eco-friendly materials.<\/p>\n<p>The move by Costa Rica\u2019s southern Pacific businesses serves as an \u201cexample of a sustainable community effort for the world,\u201d said Minister of Environment and Energy Edgar Guti\u00e9rrez, who attended the event.\u00a0The minister said he would present the initiative to the United Nations in order to raise awareness of
