Jeremy: <\/strong>What are the challenges The Responsible Safari Company is trying to address?<\/h5>\n

Kate:\u00a0<\/strong>We are using\u00a0educational travel to find sustainable solutions\u00a0to village development.<\/p>\n

We want to encourage\u00a0local economic development and a\u00a0reduction in the reliance of aid. By supporting local community\u00a0based organisations to run income generating activities we aim to\u00a0provide them with an income to support the development activities\u00a0they are doing within their communities: environmental, education,\u00a0healthcare etc.\u00a0We are also trying to encourage and support entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

With the above aims we hope to inspire future generations of young\u00a0people to become active global citizens through their experience and\u00a0immersion in our Malawian programmes and initiatives.<\/p>\n

Jeremy: What is the impact you are trying to achieve?<\/h5>\n

Kate<\/strong>: \u00a0<\/strong>Our main goal is sustainable community development through tourism generated\u00a0income activities.<\/p>\n

We also want to\u00a0inspire future generations of young people to become active\u00a0global citizens through their experience and immersion in our\u00a0Malawian programmes and initiatives.<\/p>\n

Jeremy:\u00a0<\/strong>What’s special about your approach to meeting these challenges?<\/h5>\n

Kate<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>Formally, we are not\u00a0a charity but\u00a0a limited company registered in UK and Malawi.\u00a0We decided not to start any community organisation or charity on our own.\u00a0We work with already\u00a0established Community Based Organisations and NGO\u2019s to support the work they\u00a0are doing by offering tourism generating income. It is a business to\u00a0business model. The community hosts visitors and earns income per\u00a0visitor. We’ve worked\u00a0with 3 communities for the last 6 years.<\/p>\n

We run\u00a0a number of global development workshops in the villages, which provide\u00a0an immersive learning experience to our clients.\u00a0We also offer additional support to the communities we work with.<\/p>\n

We conduct\u00a0needs and impact\u00a0assessments of our work every 3 months.<\/p>\n

Jeremy:\u00a0<\/strong>What’s the most exciting your company has achieved so far?<\/h5>\n

Kate:\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>We are most proud of our staff and their passion to see the company\u00a0grow. Each employee\u00a0has\u00a0unique set of\u00a0skills and brings impact across\u00a0different areas of our\u00a0operations. The accountant is our “political eyes and ears” in\u00a0Malawi. Our head guide is also our company fixer. The\u00a0sales assistant\u00a0is committed to wildlife conservation. Our general manager runs her own inspiring website. The list goes on… We\u00a0believe in nurturing these skills. We feel that the ethos and company\u00a0growth comes from surrounding ourselves with exceptional staff.<\/p>\n

Another exciting thing is when\u00a0communities we work with send\u00a0us their first invoice for tourist groups they have worked with. Every\u00a0business invoice\u00a0represents the real experience delivered, not just a donation or good will. Each\u00a0transaction\u00a0makes us proud of our work\u00a0and also, hopefully, boosts community’s self-esteem.<\/p>\n

Last but not least, we are extremely excited about the fact that we created the first Malawian homestay programme.<\/p>\n

Jeremy:\u00a0<\/strong>What do you need to help you be more successful?<\/h5>\n

Kate:\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>We need more bums on seats! We need to encourage people to make\u00a0that journey to travel a bit further and take that leap of faith to\u00a0choose Malawi as their destination. For this we need people to\u00a0spread the word about The Responsible Safari Company\u00a0and our vision for sustainable tourism. We need to help dispel the idea of voyeuristic village visits and see\u00a0what a huge impact insightful behind the scenes travel can have on\u00a0both the visitor and the community if handled properly. We need\u00a0visitors to book directly with local operators like RSC who are\u00a0properly monitoring their impact. Brand Ambassadors, Journalists,\u00a0Filmographers- who can travel to Malawi and see what we are\u00a0doing.<\/p>\n

Jeremy:<\/strong> What does that success look like? Share your dream with us.<\/h5>\n

Kate<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>I want to get to the point where apart from\u00a0running our usual educational travel\u00a0groups, we will be able to run special trips for\u00a0students and young people from less privileged backgrounds. People, who can be partly funded to join our trips\u00a0to Malawi and learn about global\u00a0issues such as the Sustainable Development Goals. I want them to be\u00a0inspired and start\u00a0acting\u00a0as global citizens.<\/p>\n

My dream for the Community Based Organisations\u00a0we work with to earn enough from income\u00a0generating activities that they do not have to rely on aid. My ultimate\u00a0dream would be for the government to take more responsibility for\u00a0village rural development. But let’s start with the first dream first!<\/p>\n

Jeremy:<\/strong> If you could connect with one person, company or organisation in\u00a0responsible tourism, who would it be, and why?<\/h5>\n

Kate<\/strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0\u2028I really want Future Earth<\/a> to look at the work we are doing. They are\u00a0committed to merging the fields of academia and research to come up with\u00a0sustainable global solutions to climate change and find a way to meet The\u00a0Sustainable Development Goals. We are trying to showcase Malawian\u00a0communities as a key example of adaptable development and how\u00a0entrepreneurship can really inspire and promote sustainable change and local\u00a0economic empowerment. They should\u00a0come and see the work we are doing\u00a0and support students and academics to do pieces of research away from their\u00a0desks. Get out into the field and come to Malawi!<\/p>\n

Jeremy<\/strong>:\u00a0Which other person, company or organisation would you most like to recommend to be interviewed for this series, and why?
\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n

Kate:\u00a0<\/strong>James Borrell<\/a>. We met\u00a0last month\u00a0and now are trying to work together\u00a0to bring a group of 16-18 year olds\u00a0out to Malawi on a conservation trip. He is so inspiring and has an\u00a0incredible vision and belief in the need to educate the younger\u00a0generation on key environmental issues.<\/p>\n
