The Consortium <em>\u201cNatural North \u2013 Nature Tourism in the Northern Region\u201d<\/em> was officially announced on the 9th of April, with the presence of the State Secretary of Land Planning and Nature Conservation, Mrs. C\u00e9lia Ramos, and EUROPARC Executive Director, Mrs. Carol Ritchie.<\/p>\n<p>25% of the region&#8217;s 22.000 km2 area is protected, \u00a0including the only Portuguese National Park (<a href=\"http:\/\/natural.pt\/portal\/pt\/AreaProtegida\/Item\/1?utm_source=ep&amp;utm_medium=body&amp;utm_campaign=linktrack&amp;utm_content=wysiwyg&amp;\">Peneda-Geres<\/a>), 4 Nature Parks, 2 Geoparks, 2 cross-border Biosphere Reserves, 2World Heritage Cultural Landscapes, 19 Natura 2000 areas\u00a0and 6 Sustainable Destinations awarded with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarc.org\/nature\/european-charter-sustainable-tourism\/?utm_source=ep&amp;utm_medium=body&amp;utm_campaign=linktrack&amp;utm_content=wysiwyg&amp;\">Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas<\/a> (Peneda-Ger\u00eas, Montesinho, Alv\u00e3o, Douro Internacional, Montanhas M\u00e1gicas and Alto Minho).<\/p>\n<p>The Consortium <em>\u201cNatural North\u201d<\/em>\u00a0aims to\u00a0develop an integrated offer for Nature Tourism at a regional scale, and a joint promotion of the territory, in order to increase national and international visibility.\u00a0The regional strategy, based on the Action Plans of each of the Sustainable Destinations awarded with the Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ECST), follows the principles established by the EUROPARC Federation.\u00a0\u201cSustainability can only be achieved through cooperation and a common vision for the territory,\u201d explained\u00a0Carol Ritchie, EUROPARC
