Going green: winemakers respond to market demand for sustainable products

The Margaret River wine region is an Australian leader in sustainable wine production, according to a new report from Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

The 2022 SWA Impact Report comes on the back of new survey data which finds that 67 per cent of Australians want to purchase only sustainably made wine and 56 per cent of global drinkers “only trust sustainable wine [from Australia] that is officially certified”.

Sustainable and biodynamic wine-making, pioneered in Margaret River by celebrated winemaker Vanya Cullen, is rapidly finding converts among the region’s wine producers who, according to the report, have been directly influenced by consumer demand and a desire to “do the right thing by the planet”.

Sustainable winemaking considers environmental, social and economic aspects of wine production, including health and biodiversity of the vineyard, water usage, plastic usage and the overall carbon footprint of grape-growing, winemaking and the supply chain.
