Leading economist urges travel industry to sign up to Sustainable Development Goals

sachsOne of the world’s leading economists has urged the travel industry to commit to the UN sustainable development goals adopted last September. Speaking to guests at the World Travel and Tourism Council’s annual summit in Dallas, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute said:  ” I urge your industry to adapt the sustainable development goals as something meaningful. The scale and scope of your industry is so great. If you take on these goals it will make difference.”

In September 2015 the UN adopted the 17 sustainable development goals, and it has declared 2017 the Year of Sustainable Tourism.

Sachs added: “I would like to walk into a hotel and see that it declared ‘We support the UN sustainable development goals'”.
